ESL Endorsement – FAQ

Revised 7/14/16

Note: The payment process for the endorsement has changed. (See 6-8 below.)

  1. How many credit hours are the endorsement classes?
    • The ESL Endorsement consist 18 semesters credits, currently being offered at the 5000 level.
    • Credit is issued through Southern Utah University.
    • These courses are not inservice courses.
  2. How are the courses taught?
    • The courses are taught in a hybrid format with two sessions each week.
    • One session will be held in a traditional face-to-face (F2F) format and the other session will be a virtual (V) session and will take place in between traditional face-to-face sessions.
    • Due dates for virtual sessions will be determined by the instructor for each course.
    • Some courses require a practicum course to be taught concurrently.
  3. How much time is required for the program?
    • F2F from 4:30 pm - 3 hours each week (4:30-7:30) on the assigned day
    • Virtual sessions - 4 hours each week online
    • Homework - 3-6 hours each week
  4. What if I need to miss a class?
    • Because of the accelerated nature of these courses, and to maintain the academic integrity of the program, attendance is mandatory. This includes attending all face-to-face sessions and participating in all aspects of the virtual sessions. Virtual sessions may include webinars, videos, discussion boards, quizzes or other activities as outlined by your instructor. Active participation in a face-to-face class includes being present and participating in all activities and discussions with professionalism and respect. Grading papers, texting, checking email, or any other distracting activity will result in a loss of points.
    • Students will be permitted one absence (or the equivalent of one absence) only. Exceptions will be made for parent-teacher conferences, when necessary.
    • Students should discuss with faculty, in advance, any portion of a class they cannot attend. Absence from any class (face-to-face or virtual) or portion of any class (face-to-face or virtual) may be  reflected in the student's grade.
    • Emergency situations will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. As a general rule, however, with the second absence, the student may be asked to withdraw from the class or take a significant grade reduction as deemed appropriate by the instructor.
    • Missing one session (virtual or face-to-face) of a course is the equivalent of missing a whole week on campus.
  5. Can these courses be used for relicensure?
  6. How much does the endorsement cost?
    • The total cost of the endorsement is $750.
    • A fee is payable to Jordan School District for $336 before the first night of class. This will cover the fees for all courses.
    • The remaining amount ($414) is paid to JSD prior to the start of each course at $23 per credit.
      • 3 credit class = $69
  7. Does the District pay for the endorsement?
    • No. The district does not pay for the endorsement.
    • You may consider talking with your principal as to whether or not he/she will pay for  it or split the cost with you. Those details will need to be worked out at the school level.
  8. All payments must be made with a credit card or journal entry (for schools). Cash and checks will no longer be accepted.
  9. Do I have to buy the books for the endorsement classes?
    • At this time, the district has all books in a lending library so you do not have to purchase them.
    • This may change at any time.
  10. Will these course apply toward a lane change?
    • Yes. These courses are 5000 level classes from SUU and can be applied toward making a lane change.
  11. What if I have already taken some classes, can I use those?
    • Coursework has to be within the last 5 years, and must be approved by the Utah State Office of Education. Contact Jeff Ojeda at 801-538-7945.
    • Because the required standards for the endorsement are met across many courses in the JSD/SUU endorsement, it is usually necessary to take the complete endorsement in order to fulfill the requirements of the standards.
  12. Are there any other options for taking the ESL endorsement classes?
    • Yes. USOE is sponsoring an online endorsement. Space is limited. Cost is similar to JSD. See details at USOE Online ESL Endorsement Course. Please note that the credits offered through USOE are 2000 level classes.
    • Most universities offer an endorsement program, however, in most, if not all cases, they will be subject to full tuition costs.
